Oscar nominee Danny Aiello (Do the Right Thing), Alma Cuervo (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) and Lucy DeVito (Love, Loss and What I Wore) are headed off-Broadway in Susan Charlotte’s The Shoemaker. The play will begin previews on July 14 at the Acorn Theatre on Theatre Row and open on July 24, directed by Antony Marsellis. The limited engagement is scheduled to continue through August 14.
Set in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, The Shoemaker focuses on the title character, an Italian Jew, on a devastating day that has become a turning point in American history. A one-act version of the play was presented in the summer of 2010 starring Aiello and Lizbeth Mackay. The drama also formed the basis for A Broken Sole, one of a trilogy of short films dealing with the theme of 9/11. Released in 2006, the film was directed by Marsellis and starred Aiello, Margaret Colin, Bob Dishy, Judith Light, Laila Robins, Rebekkah Ross and John Shea.
